Just six months after Dani Aravich made her Paralympic debut at the Summer Games in Tokyo, she’s gearing up for another first: her Winter Games debut in Beijing.

A multisport athlete, Aravich, 25, competed in track-and-field in Tokyo, running the T47 classification of the 400-meter distance. (Classifications are used in the Paralympics in order to ensure fair competition and provide a structure for the different physical impairments athletes may have, according to World Para Athletics. Aravich, who was born without her left forearm, competes in T47, a designation for athletes with upper limb impairments.) In Beijing, she’ll trade her track shoes for skis in the cross-country skiing and biathlon events.

“Dani Aravich took up Para Nordic skiing a little more than a year ago, so she didn’t expect to be traveling to her first international competition so soon. But when she qualified for a world cup event in Slovenia despite her limited racing experience, Aravich joined a small group of American athletes that included Winter Paralympic gold medalists Oksana Masters and Kendall Gretsch who made the trip.”
